Platform Agnostic is a mentorship program launched with the intention of improving the diversity of voices in tech media and journalism. Founded by Alex Cranz, Cherlynn Low and Sherri L. Smith, the project will connect people from underrepresented communities with established journalists from reputable publications in the industry. We’re starting with consumer tech because it’s the space we’re most familiar with and feel responsible for, but also because it’s historically one of the least diverse areas in media.
Consumer tech is a primarily white, straight cis male-heavy industry and we’re looking to change that. There is nothing wrong with those voices — we just need to hear other perspectives to get a fuller, more complete picture of our world. If the role of the media is to assemble a jigsaw puzzle depicting the world, what we have is an excess of white pieces for the sky and not nearly enough greens, blues, reds etc. for rivers, trees and so on to get a clearer image.
We need more representation from BIPOC and LGBTQIA communities, as well as people of all ages, genders, nationalities, backgrounds and able-bodiedness. Newsrooms in all of journalism should see improvement, but we want to start with consumer tech and see if we can expand this to other areas in future rounds.
