How to Apply

Application criteria

Applicants should be from an underrepresented community, whether that be related to ethnicity, gender, age, country of origin or accessibility. Since this is a program meant to lift minority voices, we ask that applicants disclose the minority group they identify with when applying.

 

Since Platform Agnostic is meant to help people who don’t yet have a footing in tech media, we’re only considering applicants who are not making their primary income from writing. If you already have a full-time job or regular freelance gig in tech media, we will not consider your submission.

Application materials

Please be prepared to include the following with your submission. We recommend that you have your answers and essay ready before filling out the application form below.

  • Name and email address 
  • Minority group affiliation
  • If you’re interested in focusing on video, please check the box on the form that says “Video focus” for a better mentor match. 
  • An essay explaining why, in 1,000 words or fewer, why consumer tech journalism is important to you.
  • Short answers to the following questions (in 250 words or fewer):
    • What’s the most important gadget of the last 5 years?
    • What’s an under-covered aspect of consumer tech worth looking into?
    • What tech trend do you foresee going mainstream in the next 3 years? 
  • Examples of your other work (i.e. Medium posts or other written work, doesn’t have to be published at an outlet. We’re trying to get a sense of your voice.)
  • One other way you can showcase your voice, talent and enthusiasm. This could be your Twitter profile or YouTube channel. We strongly recommend that those interested in pursuing a career in video provide samples, whether it’s on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Vimeo or others.

Important dates

December 15th, 2020 is the last date to apply.

Shortlisted applicants will go through a round of interviews, and successful candidates will be informed and announced on January 31st, 2021.

The program begins March 1st, 2021.
